This weeks Top Ten Tuesday is

Top Ten Books I HAD To Buy…But Are Still Sitting On My Shelf Unread

Top Ten Tuesday is a fun weekly meme created over at the Broke and the Bookish check them and a bunch of other bloggers out to see what they have in their Top Ten Tuesday

So I have a confession to make! I have never purchased a new book that wasn’t for school I know, that’s crazy because book bloggers and lovers buy new books all the time right? Well the thing is I am incredibly cheap like Warren Buffet cheap except that I’m poor. The problem with a new book is I have no idea if I will like it, and to spend upwards of $20 bucks on book I might hate makes me break out into a cold sweat. Now I do own a few, maybe 6 new books but they were all bought for me by my mom. So this list will all be books I have purchased at used book and thrift stores but they are all books I searched for and wanted.

10. Dear John By Nicholas Sparks

I’ve watched the movie I know the score. In fact I am well versed in Sparks and he has a clearly defined formula. IRL I am not a romantic but when it comes to my entertainment the cheesier and more obnoxiously romantic  the better!  I searched for this book for months before finally finding it at a goodwill about 6 months ago. I have no idea when I will read it but I am shooting for this year! My aspirations are super lofty I know!

9. Possession By A.S Byatt

I saw this movie ages ago and ever since then I have really wanted to read it. I set out on an intensive search of every used book store and thrift shop in a 20 mile radius. I eagerly anticipated this book and fully intended to read it the second I found it. Then finally there it was, I was SO EXCITED (you can tell I was really excited because I wrote it in capitals!!) I got it home added it to my shelf and haven’t touched it since.

8.  Moloka’i By Alan Brennert

Isn't it beautiful!
Isn’t it beautiful!

The first time I saw this book I knew I wanted it simply based on the title and the cover. When I read what it was about I actually considered buying it new. Luckily I happened upon it at a goodwill and I snapped it up fully intending to read it right away and that was a year ago.

7. The entire Anne of Green Gables series by L.M Montgomery

I made a special trip to the used books store specifically for these books. That was  years ago and I have managed to read books 1 and 2 thus far.

6. Atonement By Ian McEwan

This has been a book I have wanted to read for years, and now it sits on my shelf staring at me. So that’s half the battle right?

5. Uncle Tom’s Cabin By Harriet Beecher Stowe

This is a classic right and you are supposed to read the classics. This is sitting on my virtual shelf at the moment. I have started this book maybe 3 times, but I keep putting it down in favor of something else. I honestly don’t know if I will ever really read it.

4.  Everything by Jane Austen

So I have read Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility and, I love both of them. My mom bought me a set of all the books except Northanger Abbey which I bought later, and I was so thrilled. I started Emma soon after I received them but then lost the book in a move. That was maybe 2 years ago and while I  have managed to re-read P&P I haven’t picked up another Austen. Not only do I have the physical books but I have all of them on my kindle so yeah I don’t know why either!

3. The Color Purple by Alice Walker

I feel like I must have a copy of this on my book shelf. I am however somewhat reluctant to read it because, what if it isn’t like the movie and then I feel let down, or what if it’s better than the movie and I am let down?! So there it sits mocking me everyday all day!

2.  Brideshead Revisited By Evelyn Waugh

Part, OK most of me thought it would sound super sophisticated if I told people I had read this book so I bought it. Sadly no one has been able to witness all my sophistication as I have yet to read it.

1. The Time Travelers Wife By  Audrey Niffenegger

This is another book I considered buying new but I found a like new copy so I snapped it up. I have even put off watching the movie because I wanted to read this first.

So that’s my top ten this week. Hope you enjoyed

Until Next Time

  1. Oh there is nothing wrong with second hand books. This is always the best way to see if a book was any good or not (I go by the amount of damage done to a book – generally a well enjoyed book shows a bit more wear.

    1. I agree with you about being able to see if a book is good or not. I don’t like to get books that are really messed up but a little wear and tear is ok.

  2. Wow you have some really good books on this list. I have Possession waiting on my shelf too – loved the movie, but Byatt really intimidates me. I also have Brideshead Revisited waiting. I really want to read it and then watch the tv series. And several of the others are books I want to get around to read someday…

    1. Byatt is intimidating but, I’m going to try and tackle it this year, at least I hope so. I just realized that Brideshead Revisited is on netflix so it’s kind of incentive to read the book.

    1. I feel the mocking especially when I pick up a book from the library or I read a book I just bought. I think I am gonna try and read Time Travelers wife in the next few months. I have really high hopes for it!

    1. I have read several of Spark’s novels and although they are kind of predictable they are really fun. I read the notebook and it’s a bit different than the movie but it’s just as good.

    1. I am actually hoping the ending is a bit different in the book than it was in the movie Dear John. And thanks for letting me know about the Bailey Weggens books, I am excited to read the one I have.

  4. Some oldies but goodies! And trust me, I know exactly what you mean. I’m all about shopping at yard sales, the flea market and the Goodwill.

    Happy reading!

    1. Thanks! Sometimes I feel the pressure to buy those really pretty editions of books when I see them in hauls! But so far I have resisted.I don’t know how long I can hold out.
